UCLA Women's Water Polo Selected Third in MPSF Preseason Poll

WOODLAND, Calif. - Four-time defending NCAA champion UCLA has been selected third in the 2009 MPSF preseason women's water polo coaches' poll, as announced Friday by the MPSF. The Bruins earned 40 points in the preseason poll, including one of eight first-place votes.

USC captured the top spot in the coaches' poll, earning 48 total points and six first-place votes. Stanford was selected second, collecting 41 total points and one first-place vote.

Hawai'i and California were selected fourth and fifth, respectively. San Diego State, Arizona State and San Jose State rounded out the poll's eight teams, in order.

UCLA has been ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division I preseason top-20 poll.

The Bruins enter the season having won their last 41 games, including an undefeated 2008 campaign (33-0 record). UCLA returns 15 letterwinners, including five seniors - Anne Belden, Brittany Fullen, Tanya Gandy, Kim Nelson and Katie Rulon.

UCLA opens its season playing at the Michigan Invitational on Jan. 24-25. The Bruins will face Bucknell and Indiana on Jan. 24 and Michigan on Jan. 25 at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.
