Walnut Creek, Calif. - Junior Britta Syverson and senior Anastasia Alexander both earned CRCA West All-Region honors, and sophomores Victoria Babson and Carolina Paini captured CRCA Scholar Athlete honors as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association today.
Syverson was named a first-team CRCA West All-Region selection, making it the third consecutive year that she has been named to the All-West Region team and the second straight season that she has been named to the first team. Syverson received second-team honors back in 2010 as a freshman. This season, Syverson has rowed in the varsity eight boat in every one of UCLA's races and has helped the team reach the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history.
Alexander was named second-team West All-Region by the CRCA. Like Syverson, she has rowed with the varsity eight in every race for the Bruins this season and played a big role in helping the team return to the NCAA Championships. This is the first time in her career that Alexander has received All-Region honors.
Both Babson and Paini have earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors for the first time in their careers. Criteria for the scholar-athlete award includes maintaining a 3.5 grade point average or higher for a student-athlete's career. Babson has rowed mainly with the varsity four throughout her sophomore season and has seen time in the second varsity eight boat as well. Paini has stroked the second varsity eight in every race this season and helped the boat have undoubtedly their finest season yet, highlighted by their win at the San Diego Crew Classic back in March.
Ranked No. 8 in the latest CRCA poll, the Bruins will compete at the NCAA Championships in West Windsor, N.J. from Fri., May 25 to Sun., May 27.
