The No. 2/No. 4 (Golfstat/Golfweek) ranked UCLA men's golf team finished the first round of the NCAA West Regional at The Farms Golf Course tied for second place.
The Bruins recorded an overall score of 287 (-1), which currently puts them nine strokes behind leaders USC, who posted a score of 278 (-10). The Bruins are tied with Texas for second place at 287 (-1) while North Texas finished the day in fourth place at 293 (+5). San Diego rounded out the top five with a score of 294 (+6). The top five finishers from the regional will move on to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, OK held in approximately two weeks.
Individually, freshman Patrick Cantlay posted a 69 (-3) to finish round one in a tie for 4th place, three shots back of the leader. Sophomore Pontus Widegren is five shots off the lead after shooting a 71 (-1) for his round. Widegren birdied three of his final four holes to climb all the way up to a tie for 13th place. Junior Alex Shi Yup Kim tied for 23rd place after shooting a first round 73 (+1) while sophomore Pedro Figueiredo recorded a 74 (+2) and is currently tied for 30th place. Finally, junior Gregor Main shot a 75 (+3) after making eagle on his final hole to finish the day in a tie for 34th place.
Jeffrey Kang of USC was the first round leader with a score of 66 (-6).
