Senior Kaila Shull was selected with the 19th-overall pick by the Akron Racers in Wednesday's National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Draft. Shull was one of two UCLA seniors drafted by the Racers, who also chose Megan Langenfeld with the 11th pick.
The Akron Racers, based out of Akron, Ohio, have had a pair of former Bruins on their roster, Nicole Odom (1999-2000) and Caitlin Benyi (2006-07). Shull and Langenfeld will be the 21st and 22nd former Bruins to play in the NPF.
The Racers, as well as the other three NPF teams, the Chicago Bandits, the Tennessee Diamonds and the USSSA Florida Pride, start their season in June at the conclusion of the collegiate campaign.
The Bruins open the 2010 season on Friday at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational in Clermont, Fla. UCLA, ranked eighth by the NFCA and sixth by USA Softball in the national preseason rankings, starts off with #7/#8 Georgia at 2 p.m. PT and UCF (4 p.m. PT) on Friday. On Saturday, the Bruins take on Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. PT and #16/#18 Tennessee at 12 p.m. PT before wrapping up the weekend against #4/#3 Michigan on Sunday at 6 a.m. PT.
