No. 3 UCLA Men's Water Polo Cruises Past Concordia, 17-5

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team defeated Concordia, 17-5, in a non-conference match Saturday morning at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. UCLA netted at least one goal from 11 players, as six Bruins each tallied a pair of goals.

UCLA (13-5) claimed the game's first lead on a goal by sophomore Ben Hohl with 5:41 to play in the first quarter. Concordia (15-12) responded with consecutive goals from Duje Grubisic - on a five-meter penalty shot - at 5:20 and from Kevin Rice to help the Eagles secure a 2-1 advantage.

The Bruins outscored Concordia by a 3-0 margin to assume a 4-2 lead after one quarter.

UCLA raced to a 7-2 advantage after senior Krsto Sbutega scored the first of his two goals with 4:43 remaining in the first half. Grubisic's second goal of the morning sliced the Bruins' cushion to 7-3, before UCLA added two goals from freshman Brett Hays to lead 9-3 at halftime.

After outscoring Concordia, 5-1, in the second quarter, the Bruins used a 6-1 scoring run in the third frame to secure a 15-4 advantage. Junior Cole Consani opened the quarter with the second of his two goals at the 7:26 mark, handing UCLA a 10-3 lead.

The Bruins followed with a five-meter penalty shot by Sbutega (5:06), back-to-back goals by juniors Scott Davidson (4:27) and Tyler Jemmett (3:52) and a strike from senior Russell Simpkins (1:35) to lead 14-3. Both teams traded goals in the final 63 seconds of the third quarter.

Senior Chris Allen scored with 5:16 to play, giving UCLA a 16-4 lead. After a goal by Concordia's Brad Fuller with 65 seconds remaining, sophomore Clay Jorth found the back of the cage with 38 seconds to play.

UCLA junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered four saves in the first half. Freshman Andrew Mesesan made one stop in the third quarter, and junior Alex Lawrence tallied three saves in the final period.

Concordia goalkeeper Ryan Freerks netted five saves in 27:52. Barrett Carlton manned the cage for the visiting Eagles in the first 4:08 of the third quarter.

The Bruins return to action against No. 8 UC San Diego (17-9) in a non-conference match Sunday, Nov. 9. Sunday's contest at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is slated for 1 p.m. UCLA will honor its three seniors - Chris Allen, Krsto Sbutega and Russell Simpkins - prior to the game.
