UCLA Registers 4-0 Victory over Minnesota

Jan. 28, 2011

LOS ANGELES - The No. 6 UCLA men's tennis team moved one step closer to earning a spot in next month's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors on Friday, posting a 4-0 victory over Minnesota during ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA (3-0) advances to face Florida State (5-1) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Seminoles downed Fresno State, 4-1 in their match on Friday.

"I thought Minnesota was going to be pretty good and they were," said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. "They fought really well. We are going to have to really fight for a lot of matches this year and we were able to do that today."

UCLA's Daniel Kosakowski and Amit Inbar paced the Bruins on Friday, as each player contributed significantly in both singles and doubles. Kosakowski teamed with Clay Thompson at No. 3 doubles, posting an 8-3 win over Minnesota's Julian Dehn and Brendan Ruddock. He then improved to 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position this year with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Rok Bonin. Inbar started his day with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot with freshman Adrien Puget. He then notched a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Sebastian Gallego at No. 2 singles.

Holden Seguso was the other singles winner on the day for the Bruins, taking a 6-4, 6-3 win over Julian Dehn at court No. 6. Thompson (court No. 3) and Alex Brigham (court No. 5) were just heading to third sets when play was suspended. Puget was close to finishing his match at court No. 4, as he had won the first set and was up 6-5 in the second.

Tomorrow marks only the second-ever meeting between UCLA and Florida State. The Bruins defeated the Seminoles, 4-0 in the NCAA Round of 16 in 2008.

"I hope we give them a dog fight," said Martin of Florida State. "We are going to have to play our best match of the year if we are going to come out on top."

ITA Kick-Off Weekend continues tomorrow at the Los Angeles Tennis Center with four matches on the schedule. The women begin play at 9:00 a.m. with Sacramento State taking on Pepperdine. That match will be followed by the UCLA women against San Diego at Noon. The UCLA men will face Florida State at 3:00 p.m., and Fresno State takes on Minnesota at 6:00 p.m.
