STOCKTON, Calif. - Junior Scott Davidson scored two goals and junior Chay Lapin registered a season-high 13 saves to lead the No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team in a 6-5 loss to No. 2 USC in the championship match of the NorCal Tournament late Sunday afternoon at Pacific's Chris Kjeldsesn Pool. The Bruins (4-1) finished second in the annual mid-season tournament.
USC's Matt Sagehorn scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in the final quarter to snap a 5-5 tie and hand the Trojans (10-0) the NorCal Tournament title. UCLA made its first appearance in the NorCal Tournament's first-place match since 2002.
Both teams traded goals in the first quarter, and UCLA assumed a 3-2 cushion at halftime. USC outscored UCLA, 2-1, in each of the third and fourth quarters to secure the 6-5 victory.
Shea Buckner led the Trojans with two goals, and USC goalkeeper Joel Dennerley made 11 stops.
The Bruins return to action with an MPSF contest against No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday, Oct. 4. Game time at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center (Pasadena, Calif.) that day remains to be determined.
