LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Junior Kaila Shull went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, while sophomore Monica Harrison went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run, as the third-ranked Bruins held on to defeat FIU 5-3 on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational.

The Bruins win their 15th in a row to improve to 20-2 on the year, while the Golden Panthers fall to 10-11. UCLA plays its second game of the day against Iowa at approximately 6 p.m.

Junior Whitney Baker started in the circle and improved to 7-0 on the year, allowing three runs, five hits and four walks in six innings with one strikeout.

The Bruins struck first with a run in their first at-bat. With one out, sophomore Katie Schroeder walked and stole second. One out later, Shull lifted a high fly ball to left field, but it turned around FIU's Iriseldis Soberon, falling in for an RBI triple to make it 1-0.

Shull came through again in the third, driving in two more. With one out, Schroeder bunted for an infield single and moved to third on a double to right by sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore. Shull followed with a single down the right-field line, plating both runners to put the Bruins up 3-0.

UCLA tacked on one more in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Amy Crawford was hit by a pitch to start off the inning, stole second and came home to score on a single up the middle by Harrison to make it 4-0.

FIU closed the gap with three runs in the top of the sixth. With one out, Jenny Welch was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double to center by Lauren Spiers. The Golden Panthers got on the board with a single to right-center by Ashley McClain to score Welch and make it 3-1. After Baker got Jessica Landau to pop out to short for the second out of the inning, Carolina Rojas was hit to load the bases and Lisa Brooks singled through the left side to bring home Spiers and McClain to cut the deficit to 4-3. Baker would get out of the inning though, retiring Desiree Fink on a groundout.

The Bruins got one of the runs back to start the bottom of the sixth on Monica Harrison's fifth home run of the season to make it 5-3.

Sophomore Donna Kerr came in to relieve Baker, tossing a scoreless seventh inning for her first save of the season. She allowed one walk and struck out one.

Spiers had two hits for FIU. Kasey Barrett pitched the first three-plus innings, allowing five hits, four runs and one walk with one strikeout. McClain tossed the last three innings, giving up three hits and a run with two strikeouts.
