Ida Storm and the 4x400m relay team punched their ticket to NCAAs on the final day of competition at the NCAA Prelim Round to cap off three days of events in Austin, TX.
Storm started off the hammer competition a little rough as she struggle with her first throw, posting a mark of 192-8. The second round was much better as she improved to 210-3, guaranteeing her 3 more throws. In the finals, Storm improved to 214-9 on her first throw and finished the competition sixth overall. Her fifth throw was for a distance of 207-6 and her final throw was 214-1. She qualifies for her second consecutive NCAA Outdoor meet.
The 4x400m relay team was running out of lane one in heat one of the quarterfinals. The foursome of Ally Courtnall, Katie Reid, Breyonna Hunter and Turquoise Thompson finished third in their heat in dramatic fashion to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Thompson took the team from eighth-place when she was handed the baton to third at the finish line (3:36.90), guaranteeing the Bruin foursome a spot at NCAAs. She edged out Baylor's anchor leg by .06 seconds. The 4x400m relay finished ninth overall through the three quarterfinal rounds.
Joining Storm and the 4x400m relay at the NCAA Championships June 6-9 in Des Moines, IA are Kylie Price (long jump) and Thompson (400m hurdles).
Freshman Faith Anumba narrowly missed a spot in her first NCAA Championship meet by one place after finishing 13th in the triple jump on Saturday. She posted a mark of 41-7.75 in the prelims to earn three more jumps as she stood in 13th-place. Anumba could not make up any ground on her last three attempts and finished 13th. She came into the meet ranked 18th in the region.
In the 100m hurdles quarterfinal round, freshman Brea Buchanan was competing out of lane seven in heat three. She finished seventh in her heat and 19th overall in a time of 13.51. She does not advance to the NCAA meet.
Redshirt freshman Kelsey Smith finished 10th in heat one of the 5000m semifinal and was 18th overall in a time of 17:01.01. She came into the meet ranked 42nd in the West Region.
