Los Angeles - Right-hander Jason Novak threw 4.2 scoreless innings in relief and southpaw Brendan Lafferty allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings as the 13th-ranked Bruins (1-1) dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 23 Winthrop (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Leading 2-0 after two innings, the Bruins surrendered six runs in the third inning and could not overcome the deficit.

Junior Mickey Weisser continued his hot hitting with his second-conseuctive 2-for-4 performance. The transfer student from Sierra Junior College also registered two RBI. Junior Alden Carrithers and sophomore Brandon Crawford were the other two Bruins to record two hits. Carrithers, a transfer student from UC Santa Barbara, finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Crawford went 2-for-5 with one run scored.

UCLA got on the board first with one run in each of the first two innings. Carrithers doubled to left field and advanced to third on Crawford's ensuing single. After senior Tim Stewart reached first on a walk, Weisser knocked home Carrithers on a single to right.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore Tim Murphy reached first on a fielding error by Winthrop third baseman Bryn Henderson. Classmate Ryan Babineau walked and sophomore Eddie Murray advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line. Carrithers brought home Murphy with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Winthrop's six-run third inning was headlined by four singles (two infield hits) and five walks. Five of the Eagles' six runs were scored with two outs. Sophomore Paul Schmidt (0-1) walked the first two batters, struck out second baseman Phil Carey, and allowed a base hit to center fielder Kevin Nolan to load the bases. Outfielder Tommy Lentz drew a base on balls to bring home catcher Jayson Hernandez.

Schmidt struck out left fielder Billy Froehlich before being lifted for senior Kevin Brophy, who allowed two runs on two hits and two walks.

The Bruins rallied in the fifth inning with two runs. With one out, Crawford advanced Carrithers to third base with a double to left center. Stewart reached first with a single deep in the hole at shortstop, allowing Carrithers to score and Crawford to take third base. Weisser brought home Carrithers with a sacrifice fly to left field.

UCLA and Winthrop wrap up their three-game series with Sunday afternoon's rubber game, slated for 1 p.m. Freshman Gavin Brooks makes his collegiate debut for the Bruins and will face Winthrop right-hander Jason Franzblau (4-1, 3.30 in 2006).

Game Notes: UCLA junior Mickey Weisser is tied for the team lead in batting average (.500, 4-for-8)...senior Tim Stewart is also hitting .500 with two less at-bats (3-for-6)...the 1-4 hitters in UCLA's batting lineup are hitting a combined .428 through two games (Carrithers, Crawford, Stewart and Weisser)...freshmen Justin Uribe and Gabe Cohen and redshirt freshman Dustin Quist saw their first collegiate action Saturday.
