Decker's Walk-off Blast Lifts Gold Team to Blue-Gold World Series Title

Nov. 18, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Junior Cody Decker belted a two-run walk-off home run over the right field fence to send the Gold Team past the Blue Team, 5-4, Friday evening in the annual Blue-Gold World Series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Decker's blast - which handed the Gold Team a 3-1 series victory (best-of-five) - came on a 2-and-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the seventh (and final) inning.

The Gold Team's victory capped a four-game series that featured several impressive offensive performances. Freshman outfielder Brett Krill led the victorious Gold Team, hitting 8-for-15 with one double and one triple in four contests.

Decker, who led the Bruins with 14 home runs last spring, finished the series 5-for-12 with two home runs and one double. Junior third baseman Jermaine Curtis, who served as the Gold Team's manager, hit 5-for-14 with two doubles.

Senior outfielder Brady Dolan led the Blue Team, offensively, hitting 7-for-13 with two triples and one double. Sophomore first baseman Casey Haerther posted a 7-for-15 effort with three doubles. Sophomore outfielder Blair Dunlap hit 5-for-11, collecting two doubles and one triple.

Serving as the Blue Team's manager, junior left-handed pitcher Tim Murphy allowed just two earned runs off four hits in six innings of work Thursday. Murphy collected three strikeouts in his lone series start for the Gold Team. Sophomore right-hander Charles Brewer recorded two strikeouts against the Blue Team in 3.1 scoreless innings Thursday.

Freshman left-hander Mitchell Beacom earned the victory and struck out four hitters in Friday's series-clincher, limiting the Blue Team to two hits in three scoreless innings of relief.

Ranked No. 12 in CSTV's fall top 25 rankings, UCLA opens its 2008 season with a three-game series against Oklahoma at Jackie Robinson Stadium beginning Friday, Feb. 22. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
