Coral Gables, Fla. - Senior right-hander Tyson Brummett recorded eight strikeouts in 7.2 efficient innings as No. 11 UCLA dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 5 Miami on Friday evening at Mark Light Field. Brummett (1-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run off three hits.
UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford gave his team an opportunity to tie the game when he led off the ninth inning with a double down the right-field line. With two outs, Crawford reached third base on a wild pitch, evening the count at 1-1. Miami freshman Eric Erickson retired pinch-hitter Brady Dolan for the final out and earned his first save in his first collegiate appearance.
The Bruins collected four hits against Miami senior left-hander Scott Maine and Erickson, yet could not move those runners home. UCLA left eight men on base, and Miami stranded six. Erickson finished the evening with five strikeouts in four scoreless innings of relief.
In another highly-anticipated pitching duel featuring Brummett, UCLA's ace, Friday night's series opener between the Bruins and Hurricanes lived up to the hype. Brummett made 118 pitches in 7.2 innings, and senior Paul Schmidt struck out the one batter he faced in the eighth inning on four pitches. Maine (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out five.
Miami scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the third. Center fielder Blake Tekotte drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on second baseman Jemile Weeks' sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Roger Tomas moved Tekotte to third with a single to right field. One batter later, Tekotte scored on first baseman Yonder Alonso's sacrifice fly to center.
Both teams squandered early opportunities to score. The Bruins left two runners in scoring position on base in the first inning and the Hurricanes stranded runners on first and second base in the second frame. In the fourth inning, Bruin left fielder Mickey Weisser led off with a triple to right field before Maine struck out Crawford and induced two ground-ball outs. Two innings later, the Bruins led off with runners at first and second and could not capitalize.
The Bruins and Hurricanes resume their series on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (PST). UCLA southpaw Brendan Lafferty (1-0) will make his first start of the season against Miami right-hander Danny Gil.
