World Record holder and UCLA assistant coach, Mike Powell, has been named the West Region Women's Jumps Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association after a stellar year by his athletes.

USTFCCCA honors the top assistant coaches in the four regions in the following categories: men's and women's sprints/hurdles, distances, jumps/combined events and throws. Coaches from each region vote on the awards.

The Division I Assistant Coaches of the Year are selected on the basis of both indoor and outdoor accomplishments.

Powell's group of young, talented athletes are highlighted by Rhonda Watkins, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world in the long jump. This season, she has captured the NCAA Indoor long jump crown, Pac-10 long and high jump titles, a West Region long jump title, set a Pac-10 long jump record and is the top-ranked jumper in the NCAA this season.

Along with Watkins, Renee Williams has had a great season. Williams will be competing at the NCAA Championships in the long jump next week and was a regional qualifier in both the long and triple.

Keneisha Creary competed at the NCAA Championships in the high jump and was a regional qualifier in both the high and triple jump. Maryann Wee was a regional qualifier in the high jump, while Nicole Duhart (triple) and Danielle Watson (long) also competed at the Regional meet.
