Four UCLA Men's Water Polo Players to Compete for Junior National Team

Aug. 9, 2010

PINECREST, Fla. - Sophomores Bret Lathrope, Josh Samuels and Griffin White and redshirt freshman Chris Wendt of the UCLA men's water polo team will compete for Team USA at the 2010 UANA Junior Pan American Championships beginning Tuesday in South Florida.

Each of these Bruins competed for the USA Junior National Team in high school. Samuels, Wendt and White helped lead Team USA to the gold medal at the 2008 Junior Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Competing in Group A during the 10-team pool play period, the United States will face Argentina, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago. The first, second and third-place teams from Groups A and B will advance to the quarterfinal round. The fourth and fifth-place teams from each group will play each other in a quarterfinal bracket to determine the seventh-place and ninth-place game matchups.

Lathrope, Samuels and White each had strong freshman campaigns for the UCLA men's water polo team in 2009. Wendt utilized a redshirt season and will enter the Bruins' 2010 season with four years of eligibility remaining. White finished third on the team with 33 goals, and Samuels netted 32. Lathrope finished his rookie season with 11 goals.
