Senior infielder Samantha Camuso (Redding, Calif./Foothill HS) of the UCLA softball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Apr. 30-May 6.
Camuso drove in 10 runs in the 17th-ranked Bruins' series victory over #13 Arizona last weekend, going 4-for-9 at the plate with a pair of home runs on her Senior Day on Sunday.
Camuso, who slugged 1.111 in the three contests and had an on base of .500, started the weekend with a pair of RBI on Friday. After making an out in each of her first three at-bats, the redshirt senior came through in UCLA's five-run sixth inning. With two outs and the score 7-4, Camuso knocked in two runs with a single up the middle to increase the Bruins' advantage to 9-4.
Camuso drove in two more on Saturday without the benefit of a hit. She drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning that tied the game at one. In the fifth, her one-out sacrifice fly upped the Bruins' lead to 3-1, which proved to be the game-winning tally. She would walk in her final at-bat in the sixth.
But Camuso saved her best for last, accounting for all six Bruin RBI (all with two outs) during her final regular-season home game at Easton Stadium. In the first inning, the senior belted a three-run homer to left-center to stake the Bruins to a 3-0 lead. With the score tied at three going into the bottom of the third, Camuso gave the Bruins the lead back, crushing a two-out, two-run homer to make it 5-3. Trailing 7-5, UCLA rallied in the seventh to have runners at the corners with two outs. Down to her last strike, Camuso extended the game with an RBI single. Despite the six RBI, the Bruins still fell one run short in the weekend finale.
The six RBI for Camuso were one shy of a career high, but it marked the 15th time in UCLA history that a Bruin has driven in at least half a dozen in a game. It was also the first-career, two-homer game for the fifth-year senior. Camuso is third on the team with a .378 batting average, second with a .764 slugging percentage and fourth with 12 home runs and 44 runs batted in.
This is Camuso's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and second of her career.
