LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Washington in a Pac-10 Conference showdown at Drake Stadium on Friday evening. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 9-7-1 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10. Washington improves to 11-6-1 and 4-3 in conference play.
Washington scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute on Alex Webber's third goal of the season. Husky goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann actually had a hand in the goal, as she started the play by passing a long ball to midfield. Sarah Martinez then headed the ball forward into space allowing Webber, who had slipped behind the Bruin back line, to run onto it. She eventually found herself in a one-on-one situation with Bruin goalkeeper Chante' Sandiford before finishing to the lower left corner to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
Despite out-shooting Washington, 14-7 on the evening, UCLA couldn't find the back of the net for the third straight game. The Bruins' best chance of the night came in the 36th minute when Sydney Leroux got loose on a breakaway, just missing a shot over the crossbar.
The Bruins will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, hosting Washington State at 1:00 p.m. The Cougars lost to USC, 3-2 on Friday. Sunday will be Senior Day for seven Bruin seniors who are playing in their final regular-season match at Drake Stadium.
