Although a two hour weather delay halted the start of the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, IA, the No. 6 Bruin men had a strong showing as six men advanced to the finals of their respective events. Lightning, rain and high winds eventually subsided around midday into a sunny, warm afternoon, allowing the competitors a dry competition surface. Greg Garza, Darius Savage, Boldizsar Kocsor, Dustin DeLeo, Johnny Quinn and Henry Hagenbuch took advantage of the break in the weather to advance out of day one.
Quinn and DeLeo each tied for first as 16 men cleared 17-2.75 in the pole vault to advance to Friday's final. Garza was fourth in the discus with a mark of 185-4 and Savage was eighth (181-11) as both advance to Friday's final. Freshman Bo Taylor just missed a spot in the finals as he finished 13th overall (174-0).
Hagenbuch had a strong run in the steeplechase, finishing fourth in his heat and eighth overall (8:49.54) to automatically advance to Friday's final. Kocsor was fourth overall in the hammer with a top throw of 218-5 to advance to Friday's final.
In the prelims of the 800m, freshman Cory Primm finished 19th in a time of 1:50.16 and does not advance to the semifinal rounds. Freshman Taylor Hobson tied for 20th in the high jump with a clearance of 6-8.50.
On Thursday, competition continues with the prelims of the shot put, the first round of the 110m hurdles and the semifinals of the 1500m.
