Santa Barbara, Calif. - UCLA freshman Kevin Kuga scored the game-winning goal with 1:15 to play in the first overtime period Sunday afternoon, lifiting the third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team past sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 7-6. The win handed the Bruins a two-game road sweep and was UCLA's fourth victory in its last five games. UCLA freshman Scott Davidson and senior Michael March each finished with two goals.
The Bruins won the sprint in the first overtime period, and after each team missed one shot, Kuga found the back of the cage, skipping a shot past goalkeeper Rick Wright to give UCLA a one-goal cushion. Both teams held each other scoreless for the remaining 2:45 of the first overtime period and the subsequent three-minute second overtime.
Neither team scored in the first period, before UCLA (13-5, 4-2 MPSF) scored the game's first goal on a shot by Scott Davidson with 6:28 remaining in the second quarter. UC Santa Barbara (18-12, 3-4 MPSF) evened the margin just 35 seconds later, and the Bruins recaptured the lead at 4:13 on Davidson's second goal of the afternoon.
UCLA led 3-2 at halftime, and each team tallied two third-quarter goals. Senior Michael March gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead with 4:30 to play in the third quarter before UC Santa Barbara's Coulson Lantz scored for the Gauchos, cutting UCLA's lead to 4-3. Powell scored his first goal of the day - his sixth of the weekend - with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter before UC Santa Barbara answered with 15 seconds to play on a goal by Travis Watts.
The Gauchos outscored UCLA, 2-1, in the fourth quarter to force overtime. UC Santa Barbara tied the contest, 5-5, with 4:31 remaining in regulation. The Bruins reclaimed the lead on a goal by junior Marco Santos with 3:29 to play. UC Santa Barbara overcame the one-goal deficit with 1:21 remaining in the fourth quarter on a shot from Miles Price.
Kuga's goal in overtime capped the dramatic victory for UCLA. Freshman goalkeeper Chay Lapin made nine stops for the Bruins. Gaucho goalkeeper Rick Wright totaled 19 saves.
The third-ranked Bruins return to UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Friday, Nov. 17, to play Long Beach State. Game time is 3 p.m.
