Commerce, Calif. - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team advanced to the semifinal round of the SoCal Tournament with a 6-4 victory over Long Beach State (4-8, 0-1) late Saturday afternoon. Freshman Scott Davidson led the Bruins' offensive charge with two goals.
The win against the 49ers, coupled with a 9-6 victory over Stanford earlier in the day, pits UCLA (8-2, 1-0) in a semifinal-matchup against second-ranked California (16-2, 0-1). The Bruins will face the Golden Bears on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 11:20 a.m. at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. In the other semifinal contest, UC San Diego will face host USC at 10 a.m.
Staked to a 3-0 lead through the first quarter, the Bruins never looked back against Long Beach State. UCLA and Long Beach State each exchanged goals in the second quarter to give the Bruins a 4-1 advantage at the half. In the third quarter, the Bruins blanked the 49ers, 2-0, before Long Beach State answered with three goals in the fourth quarter.
Aside from Davidson, UCLA received goals from juniors Justin Johnson and Marco Santos and seniors Tyler Krikorian and Michael March. The Bruins' victory was their first of the season over Long Beach State. Both teams will face each other at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Friday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m.
