Dec. 6, 2008

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Dicey McGraw had a match-high 13 kills, senior Ali Daley added 10 kills and senior Nellie Spicer posted a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs, as the #14-seeded Bruins knocked off Duke in three sets in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion. Scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-17.

The Bruins improve to 22-10 overall and will face third-seeded Texas in the Regional semifinal on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT. The Blue Devils conclude their season at 25-9.

Senior Jessica Fine notched a match-best 21 digs, while sophomore Jazmin Machado had 11 digs. The Bruins hit .244 as a team.

Duke held the lead at the start of the first set, taking a 9-6 advantage, but the Bruins came back with runs of 6-0 and 11-1 to take a 17-10 lead. In the 6-0 run, freshman Amanda Gil started things with a kill, followed by a Daley kill and block and another Gil spike. Daley then had another kill and a Duke ball handling error put the Bruins up 12-9. After a Blue Devil sideout, Daley had three straight points on a kill and back-to-back aces. Following a Duke error, a Gil/McGraw block gave the home team a 17-10 advantage.

The Blue Devils cut their deficit to five at 19-14, but the Bruins scored six of the last eight points of the opener to win it 25-16. McGraw had two kills during the final run, while freshmen Katie Camp and Sara Sage each had a kill and a block. A Sage kill on the Bruins' second set point gave them the victory. McGraw paced the Bruins with five kills in the first, while Daley added four. The Bruins out-hit the Blue Devils .184 to .098.

Just like the first set, the Blue Devils took an early lead at 5-2, but the Bruins made another run to take command. Trailing 6-5, UCLA scored five straight and nine of the next 10 to take a 14-7 advantage. During the 5-0 run, Sage, Camp and Gil had successive kills, which was followed by a Gil/Camp block and a Duke attack error. The Blue Devils sided out, but another 4-0 UCLA stretch gave the home team a seven-point lead. A Gil/Camp roof started the run, and after a Duke attack error, Spicer and Daley had back-to-back kills to make it 14-7.

UCLA's lead never slipped below four for the rest of the set, reaching as high as eight at 20-12. Leading 23-19, the Bruins got kills from Spicer and McGraw to record the 25-19 victory. McGraw and Spicer each had four kills in the second, while Camp posted three. The Bruins hit .212 and held the Blue Devils to a -.020 hitting percentage. Defensively, Fine had 10 digs, while Spicer added seven.

The Bruins never trailed in the third set to finish off the sweep. UCLA went on 4-1 and 7-2 runs to start the set. In the first 4-1 run, Daley had two kills, while Camp and Gil had one each. After a Duke side out, the Bruins benefited from two Blue Devil errors and got a kill from Gil to go up 7-2. UCLA still maintained a lead of four at 14-10, but three in a row by Duke cut the deficit to one at 14-13.

However, that is as close as the Blue Devils would get. The Bruins came back with three in a row on a Duke service error and two attack errors to take a 17-13 advantage. After seven successive sideouts to bring the score to 20-17, the Bruins scored the final five points to win it 25-17. Following a Duke service error, a McGraw kill and a solo block by the sophomore made it 23-17. Gil gave UCLA match point following a spike and another solo McGraw roof advanced the Bruins into the round of 16. UCLA hit .423 in the third to Duke's .152 percentage. Daley and McGraw each had four kills.

Rachael Moss led Duke with 11 kills and 14 digs, as the Blue Devils hit .065 as a team.
