LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras Webster and head men's tennis coach Billy Martin announced the signing of two very talented junior players on Monday, as Canadian Nina Pantic and local player Alex Brigham have signed letters of intent to join their respective Bruin teams in the fall of 2008.
Pantic, who was rated as the nation's No. 4 recruit in tennisrecruiting.net's class of 2007, is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, however has lived in the United States the last several years. She graduated from the Florida Virtual School in 2007 while training at International Tennis Academy in Delray Beach, Florida. She enjoyed a stellar junior career, playing in such top junior events as the Orange Bowl, Eddie Herr, and Canadian Open Junior Championships. Since graduating, she has played mainly on the ITF Circuit, winning the singles title in El Paso in 2006.
"We're extremely excited to have Nina be a part of this program," said Sampras Webster, who is entering her 12th season as head coach. "She has competed at the highest level and has a lot of experience, so we expect her to contribute immediately as a freshman next season."
On the men's side, Brigham, from Culver City, Calif., is listed as a four-star recruit in the class of 2008 according to tennisrecruiting.net. He was a singles finalist in the CIF Southern Section Championships in 2007, and is currently listed at No. 13 in the Southern California Junior Rankings. Brigham, who attends Pacifica Christian High School, was also a singles semifinalist in the CIF draw at the Ojai Valley Tennis Championships.
"We are looking forward to having yet another good, young local player join our team," said Martin, who signed three Southern California players last year. "Alex has a lot of potential and we are looking forward to him making an impact on this program for years to come."
