Aug. 18, 2009

Four members of the UCLA Bruin defense have been named to the 2009 Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, it was announced today. The award is presented annually to the top collegiate lineman, including players who line up within five yards of the line of scrimmage. The list includes 153 players from 79 teams and 11 conferences.

Junior defensive tackle Brian Price was on the initial list that was announced in March. He has been joined on the list by senior linebackers Reggie Carter and Kyle Bosworth and senior defensive end Korey Bosworth.

UCLA has the most candidates of any Pac-10 school and is one of just six schools nationally with four or more players on the list. Oklahoma has seven players on the list, followed by Florida with six and Troy with five. UCLA, West Virginia and Penn State have four each.

Price, considered the top defensive tackle in the Pac-10 and one of the best in the nation, led the Bruins with 14.0 tackles for loss in 2008. He has also been named to the Watch Lists of the Bednarik Award (top defensive player in the nation) and Outland Trophy (top interior lineman).

Carter led the Bruins in tackles a year ago with 83, including 20 at BYU. He is also on the Watch Lists of the Bednarik Award and the Lott Trophy (top defensive player of the year).

In 2008, Korey Bosworth led the Bruins with 7.5 quarterback sacks and ranked second to Price with 11.0 tackles for loss among his 55 total tackles.

In 2007, Kyle Bosworth made 74 tackles from his linebacker position to rank fifth on the Bruin squad. He missed virtually all of last year, suffering a season-ending injury in the second game. He received a substitute year of eligibility due to medical hardship.

In its history, UCLA has had three finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award - linebacker Jerry Robinson in 1975, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden in 1995 and defensive end Dave Ball in 2003.

The Rotary Lombardi Award is presented annually by Houston's Rotary Club to the nation's top college football lineman -- offense or defense -- who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi.

The Watch List was formed by using 2008 postseason and 2009 preseason all-conference and All-America teams. Additional nominations were accepted from Rotary Lombardi Award voters and college sports information directors.

On Oct. 14, the 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award will be announced. On Nov. 11, the four finalists will be named. All of the finalists will travel to Houston for the ceremony to announce the winner on Dec. 9 at the Hilton Americas.

The 2008 Rotary Lombardi Award winner was Brian Orakpo, a defensive end from the University of Texas. He was the first round draft selection of the Washington Redskins.

The Rotary Club of Houston founded the Rotary Lombardi Award in 1970, in the weeks following the death of legendary football coach Vince Lombardi from cancer. The 40th Rotary Lombardi Award dinner will be held on December 9, 2009, at the Hilton Americas Hotel. Net proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.
