Bruins Swim Past Broncos in Dual Meet Action

The UCLA swimming team opened up the 2012 portion of their season with a win as they defeated Boise State for the second consecutive year, this time by a score of 167-92. The Bruins improved to 2-2 on the season with today's victory.

During the meet, UCLA posted 11 event wins out of the 14 that were contested. They also tallied six new meet records and 12 season-best swims on Wednesday.

Sophomore Cynthia Fascella led the way with double event wins as she placed first with meet record times in both the 50 free (23.21) and 100 free (50.56).

The 200 medley relay started off the day with a meet record swim of 1:43.51 to win as Emily Andelson, Allison Gargalikis, Yasi Jahanshahi and Fascella touched-out Boise State.

Sophomore Lauren Baker then swam a season-best of 10:09.15 in the 1000 free to win. Junior Rachel Godfred finished in second, also with a season-best, swimming 10:24.86.

The Bruins then went 2-3 in the 200 free behind Laurence Delisle's second-place swim (1:51.42) and Anna Senko's third-place time of 1:51.82.

Reigel led a 1-2 finish in the 100 back as she set a new meet record with her winning time of 56.39. Andelson was second with a mark of 56.47.

Freshman Allison Gargalikis had a big win in the 100 breast as she touched first by nearly a second with a time of 1:04.11.

In the 200 fly, both Jahanshahi and Noelle Tarazona broke the previous meet record, but Jahanshahi came away with the win swimming 1:58.63, while Tarazona was second in 1:58.87.

Senko led a Bruin sweep in the 200 back as she posted a meet record of 2:01.24 to win. Delisle was second (2:02.64), while Reigel was third (2:03.50).

Tarazona finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.91, while another frosh, Monica Dornick, won the 500 free with a season-best of 5:01.57. Godfred was second to Dornick, swimming 5:05.67.

Delisle wrapped up the Bruin win with a victory and meet record in the 200 IM as she swam 2:03.69.

The swimmers will head to La Jolla, CA this Saturday to compete in the San Diego Relays, while the divers will play host to Boise State and Nebraska on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Center (10:00 am PT).
