82 Review: Bruins prepare for Cal

Oct. 7, 2010

Hello Bruin Nation

We are about halfway through the football season and currently have a nice little win streak going. The past three weeks have been very exciting for the team and Bruin fans throughout the country. After a tough start, we were able to change things around with three huge victories for our program. We are now two games into conference play and have a tough stretch ahead of us. This week we play our rival Cal, which is a huge game for us. For me the rivalry goes much deeper than Cal vs UCLA. Two of my best friends go to Cal, Michael Toledo and running back Shane Vereen --- which means that with a victory comes a year worth of bragging rights and trash talking. I know that there are many players on both teams that have high school teammates or buddies or play for the other team, which makes the rivalry that much bigger. I know that we will have a good amount of fans who will make the trip up to Berkeley to support the team.

As a team we are beginning to discover our identity. Offensively, we have discovered a new and very powerful weapon in the run game. The "Filthy Five", which we call the line, has been dominating opponents over the past few games. Both of our running backs, Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman, have made huge runs spring-boarding our offense to put up big points. Defensively, our linebackers have been laying the hammer on other teams, while also making game-changing plays. Akeem Ayers has been doing it all, creating turnovers, getting sacks and returning interceptions. Patrick Larimore has stepped up, showing he is a force to be reckoned with this season. He is all over the field making tackles along with linebacker Sean Westgate. It is exciting to see the successes of both our offense and defense in the first part of the season. However, we know it only gets harder from here and both sides of the ball have much room for improvement.

This past weekend was a special one for me, I celebrated my birthday on Sunday and was blessed to have my mom fly out for the weekend to watch my game. I don't get to see my family that often, especially, now that they live all the way across the country. It is always exciting when I get to spend time with them, especially with my mom.

I am very excited on the direction we are headed as a team. We will continue to grind away as we enter the latter part of the season in what should be an intense and exciting finish to our season. I wish all of you who plan on traveling to Berkeley a safe trip.
