LOS ANGELES - UCLA dropped a 10-5 decision to No. 4 Arizona State on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins (23-19, 6-7 Pac-10) raced to a 5-0 lead, before the visiting Sun Devils (36-7, 11-5 Pac-10) scored twice in the fourth and added eight runs in the final two innings to assume a 10-5 advantage.

Arizona State took advantage of four home runs, including two by center fielder Jason Kipnis, to erase a five-run deficit. Kipnis went 3-for-5 with two runs and a game-high four RBI. Designated hitter Marcel Champagnie was 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run.

Bruin third baseman Jermaine Curtis went 4-for-5, scoring a team-high two runs. Shortstop Brandon Crawford went 1-for-4 with one double and two RBI. First baseman Casey Haerther logged his team-leading 16th double of the year.

Each team's starting pitcher tossed seven innings, recorded 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk and did not earn a decision. Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy allowed four runs and eight hits, while Arizona State right-hander Mike Leake allowed five runs and eight hits.

Arizona State's Tommy Rafferty (9-0) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to earn his ninth victory of the season. UCLA left-hander Brendan Lafferty (1-2) absorbed the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) and four hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Lafferty recorded three strikeouts and issued one walk.

Arizona State used a 13-hit attack to overcome an early five-run deficit. With the contest tied, 5-5, in the top of the ninth inning, Kipnis belted his second homer of the game - a two-run shot to right - to hand the Sun Devils a 7-5 lead. ASU tacked on three more runs in the inning, taking advantage of two singles, three stolen bases and one error.

The Sun Devils got on the board with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fourth, cutting the Bruins' advantage to 5-2. Third baseman Brett Wallace lined a round-tripper over the center field fence and catcher Petey Paramore belted a homer to left-center field on the next at-bat. ASU used a two-run homer by Kipnis in the top of the eighth to reduce their deficit to 5-4.

UCLA raced to a 5-0 lead through the first three innings, scoring one run in the top of the first before adding four runs in the third inning. The Bruins claimed the game's first lead on a one-out RBI single to center by left fielder Alden Carrithers, who sent home Curtis.

In the third inning, Curtis led off with a single to left, moved to second after Carrithers was hit by a pitch and scored on a base-hit to left field by Haerther. Crawford lined a two-RBI double to left field, handing UCLA a 4-0 cushion. Crawford scored two batters later, as designated hitter Mickey Weisser singled to left field.

The Bruins and Sun Devils resume their three-game series on Saturday, May 3. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday's ballgame will be broadcast live, nationally, on Fox Sports Net - viewers in Los Angeles can watch the game tape delayed at 8:30 p.m. following the Dodgers' game.
