Malibu, Calif. - Senior Logan Powell tied his career high with five goals and junior Matthew Jacobs and freshman Scott Davidson each added three goals to lift the third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team past ninth-ranked Pepperdine, 18-5, Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
UCLA (12-5, 3-2 MPSF) got on the board 34 seconds into the contest on Powell's first goal. The senior attacker wasted little time, scoring his second goal at 5:13. Jacobs gave UCLA a 3-0 advantage at 4:19. Seniors Grant Zider (3:25) and Michael March (2:12) extended the Bruins' lead to five.
Pepperdine (12-16, 1-5 MPSF) scored its first goal on a shot by Nick Corjon with 29 seconds left in the first frame. The Bruins led 6-1 after the first quarter. Davidson scored three times in the second quarter after goals by junior Marco Santos (6:52), freshman Kevin Kuga (5:57) and Powell (2:51). UCLA owned a 12-4 advantage at the half.
Powell recorded his fourth and fifth goals in the third quarter and Jacobs added his second goal of the afternoon, giving UCLA a 15-4 cushion after three quarters. The Bruins outscored the Waves 3-1 in the final quarter.
For the eighth time this season, Powell registered two or more goals. The senior attacker from San Clemente, Calif., tied his career high with the five-goal effort - Powell tallied five goals at UC Irvine on Friday, Sept. 22, in UCLA's 15-4 win.
Jacobs also tied his career high with three goals and recorded his second multiple-goal performance of the season. Sophomore Christopher Allen scored his second goal of the season with nine seconds remaining in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered 11 saves in the cage for UCLA.
The third-ranked Bruins return to action Sunday, Nov. 12, at UC Santa Barbara. The MPSF conference game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
