UCLA Wins MPSF Championship

April 29, 2007

After suffering two regular season defeats at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal, UCLA finally got its retribution in the championship match of the MPSF Tournament held in Tempe, Arizona. UCLA snapped Stanford's 22 game winning streak en route to its sixth MPSF conference championship in the 12-year history of the tournament. With the victory, the Bruins earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA tournament will be held in Los Alamitos, California, in two weeks.

Kelly Rulon continued her dominating play in the postseason, scoring a hat trick in the first quarter of play. Emily Feher made three stops in the quarter, and the Bruins led 3-0 after eight minutes. Stanford finally got its first goal in the first minute of the second period when Katie Hansen capitalized on a 6-on-5 opportunity. But UCLA continued to put pressure on the Stanford defense. Katie Rulon scored with 1:28 to play before halftime, and Courtney Mathewson hit the back of the net with just 22 seconds left in the half. The Bruins led at halftime 5-1.

The Cardinal regained its focus in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals to close within two of the Bruins. But once again, UCLA controlled the second half of the quarter by scoring three consecutive goals. Kelly Rulon's fourth goal of the game put the Bruins up 6-3, and Courtney Mathewson's second goal put UCLA up 8-3. In the fourth quarter, the airtight Bruin defense held the Cardinal scoreless. Molly Cahill scored to make the final score 9-3.

Emily Feher had eight saves in the game, and her counterpart, Meredith McColl had four. Kelly Rulon is now just three goals away from becoming UCLA's all-time leading goal scorer.
