Redshirt sophomore Matthew Kosecki (Humble, Texas/Humble HS) of the UCLA men's track and field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for May 7-13.
Kosecki won his first conference title, leading from start to finish in the discus competition at the inaugural Pac-12 Championship in Eugene, Ore. With an impressive series of throws that never dropped below 186-feet, Kosecki picked up the 16th discus crown in UCLA history. The last Bruin to win was Greg Garza in 2008. Kosecki opened the competition with a mark of 186-3 and then improved in round two to 188-4. On his third attempt, he posted a mark of 187-8 and continued to stand in first-place. He fouled his first throw in the finals and then unleashed a monster throw of 193-8 to clinch the win. That mark improved upon his previous lifetime-best of 189-2 and moved him into the Top 10 in the NCAA this season. His final throw went for a distance of 188-6 as he had already locked up the conference title.
This is Kosecki's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
