Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement (Chino, CA/Ayala HS) of the UCLA women's water polo team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Apr. 26-May 2.
Dement led the Bruins on an incredible run to capture UCLA's eighth MPSF Women's Water Polo Championship this past weekend at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins, seeded fifth for the 2010 MPSF Tournament, pulled off three straight upsets to win the title. The Bruins first defeated No. 4 Hawaii, 8-6 in the quarterfinal round on Friday (April 30) behind Dement's strong play in the cage where she picked up nine saves, including five when the Rainbow Wahine were on power play opportunities. Then the Bruins knocked off No. 1 Stanford, 7-6, on Saturday (May 1) with Dement registering 11 saves and three more when the Cardinal had 6-on-5 opportunities. In the championship match against No. 2 USC on Sunday (May 2), the Bruin goalie again registered 11 stops in the cage, including four when UCLA was short-handed. For the Tournament, Dement registered 31 saves, which ranked second in the MPSF Tournament field. Her 12 exclusion saves led all goalkeepers. While the Bruins had the toughest road of any team in the Tournament, Dement and the Bruin defense ranked third in goals allowed (19) and second in penalty killing (.824) stopping 28-of-34 possessions when opponents had a 6-on-5 opportunity.
This is Dement's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
