Fall Camp has begun and things are looking very promising. It feels good to be back in pads, but I will get to that later!
The last couple days prior to camp, I had a good time. Friday, I was able to get a fresh cut to go into camp with and then I went to see G.I. Joe with my girl. In my opinion, the movie was good and I enjoyed both the action and comedic scenes. Hopefully there is a part two.
Then I shot down to Christian Ramirez's 21st birthday party! He finally turned the big 21 and all the boys were there. My old roomie and good friend, Dominique "Dsmoove" Johnson came out, along with Tobi Umodu, Frank Guzman, Reginald Stokes and other guests.
On Saturday, I went to the "Rock the Bells" concert where Busta Rhymes, Nas, Damien Marley, Tech Nine, Ice Cube, Slum Village, and others performed during an all day event. I went in celebration of my best friend from high school, Mark Awanyai's, early birthday. It was a very cool concert and interesting since I never been to one. It was all the way in San Bernardino and it was very hot there. The highlights of the evening was Nas and Damien Marley combining on some joints and the Busta Rhymes part of the concert.
Then on Sunday, I reported to camp with my roomie Reginald Stokes, big-time/dependable Stokes! So we have been in camp for four days and we have been making steady progress towards becoming a great team. The offense is ironing out kinks day by day and the defense is doing what we do. The first two days we were in just helmets and these past two we been in helmets and shoulder pads. Overall, it has been really smooth camp and tomorrow (Friday), we get to thump a little bit more because we will be in full pads.
Impressive young athletes so far in camp in my opinion have been: on offense - Johnathan Franklin, Randall Carroll and Morrell Presley. Damien Thigpen and Ricky Marvray also have potential. Sorry Stan and Xavier, I don't see too much of offensive of line, so I can't make a comment. On defense, I would name Stan McKay, Tony Dye, Alex Mascarenas, Donovan Carter, Aaron Hester and all the young corners. I guess I am a little biased since I am a DB.
Personally, I have been using this camp as a learning experience to get my technique down for the season. Each day I see progress and something else I need to work on. It may be my press technique, my zone coverage recognition or my footwork on tackles. Every day, there is something I see to improve on! I have had two interceptions so far and hopefully they pile on with other players having opportunities for picks.
In other news, my sister, Shawn Verner, finished her summer school class a couple weeks ago! I'm proud of here for that. My older sister received a teaching job offer. So my family is doing well and I can't wait to see them this weekend to talk to them about all the stuff that been going on.
That's the latest news for this week! I'm excited that camp has started, but I am a long way from having anything accomplished yet. As a team, we have got to keep chugging away and then things will fall in place!
Until next time, everyone have a joyous week!
