Newport Beach, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team completed their fall season at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, where the Bruins' freshman eight captured a first-place finish on Sunday, Nov. 12. UCLA's two varsity four crews finished fifth and eighth.
The freshman 8+ posted a total time of 16 minutes, 53 seconds and finished exactly 50 seconds ahead of USC. Sacramento State, Orange Coast College, and both San Diego State entries rounded out the top six.
UCLA entered three boats in Sunday's race in Newport Beach, Calif. - one freshman eight crew and two varsity fours. The Bruins' freshman 8+ consisted of Christina King (stroke), Destinie Slavich, Kaitlin Doering, Whitney Standefer, Sofia Larsson, Danielle Piccinini, Alex Lauren, Anne Schier (bow) and Brittany Liljeqvist (coxswain).
The Bruins' varsity four "B" crew finished fifth, registering a time of 19:17. The varsity four "A" crew raced to an eighth-place finish, turning in a time of 19:44. San Diego, San Diego State "A", Sacramento State and San Diego State "B" rounded out the top four. Long Beach State and UC Sand Diego placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
UCLA's "A" crew consisted of Tory Kaso (stroke), Maida Habibovic, Kellie Koscher, Jen Weber (bow) and Emily Wachtel (coxswain). The "B" boat consisted of Bree Hemingway (stroke), Sheerin Salimi, Larisa Pender-Healy, Megan Lightfoot (bow) and Gevrina Seferaj (coxswain).
UCLA was scheduled to race in the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash. That event was cancelled.
The Bruins open their spring season Saturday, March 10, against Loyola Marymount in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
