LOS ANGELES - Senior Ben Hohl recorded a game-high four goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer, 9-4, in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Center in the second game of the Bruins' Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
Earlier in the day, UCLA downed No. 12 UC San Diego, 12-4. With Saturday's pair of victories, the Bruins extended their win streak to a season-high six games.
In the win over Pomona-Pitzer (12-13), Hohl notched his team-leading 11th multiple-goal game of the season. The senior from Atherton, Calif., has now registered 135 career goals, moving him into ninth place on UCLA's all-time goals list, trailing Adam Wright's 138-goal total by three scores.
Each team traded two goals in the opening frame before UCLA outscored Pomona-Pitzer, 3-1, in the second period to assume a 5-3 halftime advantage. The Bruins used a 3-0 scoring run in the third quarter to claim an 8-3 lead.
Tied at 2-2 following the first quarter, Samuels (7:32) and Hohl (6:59) scored consecutive goals to hand the Bruins a 4-2 cushion. After Pomona-Pitzer's Jaron Moler scored with 4:32 to play in the first half, Hohl netted his third goal of the match to push UCLA ahead, 5-3.
Ensuing goals in the third quarter from Hohl (4:39) on a 6-on-5 opportunity, Mirarchi (3:26) and Wherry (0:27) handed the Bruins an 8-3 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Rapacz finished with 10 saves in the cage for UCLA. Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Kyle Pokorny totaled nine saves for the Sagehens.
UCLA returns to action with an MPSF match against No. 8 Long Beach State on Sunday. Game time at Spieker Aquatics Center is 12 p.m.
