#2 UCLA Falls to #8 Tennessee 7-1

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Senior GiOnna DiSalvatore and sophomore B.B. Bates each had two-hit games, but the second-ranked Bruins lost to #8 Tennessee on Saturday by a 7-1 score during their second day at the Cathedral City Classic.

The Bruins fall to 11-3 with the loss, while the Lady Vols improve to 14-2.

Tennessee used a three-run first and a four-run second to cement its victory. In the first, the Lady Vols loaded the bases when Kelly Grieve reached on an error and Kat Dotson and Shelby Burchell drew back-to-back walks. Lauren Gibson would clear the bases with a double down the left-field line to put Tennessee on top 3-0.

In the second, the Lady Vols extended their lead to 7-0. With one out, Raven Chavanne reached on a single back to the circle and moved to second on a throwing error. Grieve then hit a triple down the right-field line to score Chavanne to make it 4-0. One out later, Burchell hit the first home run that an opponent has hit against the Bruins this season to center to up the advantage to 6-0. Gibson followed with another double to right and Jessica Spigner singled her home for the Lady Vols' seventh run.

The Bruins got on the board in the fifth with a two-out rally. Junior Katie Schroeder was hit by a pitch and Bates singled to center. DiSalvatore followed with a single up the middle to plate Schroeder to make it 7-1. The Bruins still had a chance to get back in the game after a walk to junior Andrea Harrison loaded the bases, but Tennessee's Ellen Renfroe got freshman Kellie Fox to fly out to left to end the threat.

UCLA had its chances to get back in the game, but left 10 on base, including two in the first and sixth.

Freshman Jessica Hall started and finished the game, tossing the first two innings and the last two, striking out two and giving up seven runs (six earned), six hits and three walks in four total frames. Junior Aleah Macon pitched two scoreless innings of relief, fanning four and walking two.
