Fourth-ranked UCLA tangles with No.9 UC Irvine Friday in a match sure to have playoff implications later in the season. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. Darren Preston will call the play-by-play on www.uclabruins.com. UC Irvine also will originate a broadcast on KUCI.
UCLA (7-3, 4-2) has won two straight five-game matches, defeating Pepperdine on Jan. 25 in Malibu and outlasting Cal Baptist on Thursday in Pauley Pavilion. In their last three matches, the Bruins have been extended to five games. They lost 3-2 on the road to USC on Jan. 23.
UC Irvine (6-5, 3-3) has won three straight after a 3-5 start. Last week, the Anteaters won a pair of four-game battles on the road against Pepperdine and USC. Junior outside hitter Taylor Wilson smacked 43 kills in the victories and earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors.
Currently, the Bruins are in fourth place in the MPSF race, while the Anteaters are tied for sixth place with three other teams sporting .500 records.
In the recent series between the two teams, the Bruins snapped a four-match skid against the Anteaters with a five-game victory in their last meeting on Apr. 6, 2007 in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA leads the all-time series, 50-7.
Following Friday's match, the Bruins will continue their homestand, hosting USC on Feb. 6 and Pepperdine on Feb. 9. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The USC match will be carried live on FSN/Prime Ticket and UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer Jeff Nygaard will have his jersey (#9) retired. The Pepperdine match marks the 31st Annual Kilgour Cup.
