LOS ANGELES - The UCLA rowing program has signed eight high school rowers to National Letters of Intent, as announced by head coach Amy Fuller Kearney. The group of eight student-athletes will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2011.
The Bruins' latest signing class includes seven high school rowers from California and one from Connecticut.
The UCLA rowing program has concluded its fall practice, finishing the fall season with encouraging results at the Head of the Marina and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. UCLA opens its spring season on March 5 against Loyola Marymount in Marina del Rey, Calif.
Acalanes High School (Lafayette, Calif.) - Oakland Strokes
Competing in her first year of rowing...both of her parents rowed in college (father at Wisconsin, mother at California)...prior to rowing, was active in swimming, soccer, and volleyball...completed community service in Peru in summer of 2010.
Darien High School (Darien, Conn.) - Connecticut Boat Club
Began rowing as a freshman at Darien HS...was in the CBC eight that went undefeated last year and won the USRowing Youth National Championship...has also participated in swimming, tennis and volleyball.
University City High School (San Diego, Calif.) - San Diego Rowing Club
Competing in her first year of rowing...was selected for the SDRC crew that raced at the Head of the Charles...previously played softball, soccer and volleyball...earned All-Western League and All-CIF honors in volleyball...has served twice as her school's student body vice president.
St. Francis High School (Mountain View, Calif.) - Los Gatos Rowing Club
Competing in her second year of rowing...brother rows at Northeastern University (Boston) and her father, uncle and two cousins also row...last year, was in the LGRC novice eight that won the USRowing Southwest District Championship...has also played soccer and field hockey.
St. Ignatius College Prep (San Francisco, Calif. ) - St. Ignatius College Prep
Rows for her high school's rowing team...has rowed since freshman season...last year, the St. Ignatius eight placed fourth at the USRowing Southwest District Championships.
Las Lomas High School (Walnut Creek, Calif.) - Oakland Strokes
Competing in her first year of rowing...has been an elite level soccer player prior to rowing...so far this season, has stroked the top Oakland novice crew.
Oaks Christian School (Westlake Village, Calif.) - Marina Aquatic Center
Competing in her second year of rowing...plays water polo and volleyball in addition to rowing for Marina Aquatic Center...father, Dave, and uncle, John, both rowed for UCLA when the Bruins fielded a varsity men's rowing program...has earned all-league honors in both volleyball and water polo.
Homestead High School (Cupertino, Calif.) - Los Gatos Rowing Club
Competing in her third year of rowing...last year, was in the LGRC eight that competed at the USRowing Youth National Championships...cruised in Alaska in the summer of 2010.
