Two UCLA golfers have been named to the 2010 U.S. Curtis Cup Team and a third was selected as a second alternate, the United States Golf Assn. announced Monday.
Sophomore Stephanie Kono (Honolulu, HI, Punahou School) and freshman Tiffany Lua (Rowland Heights, CA, Los Altos HS) were named to the eight-player team that will compete against a squad from Great Britain and Ireland, June 11-13 at Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. Senior Sydnee Michaels (Temecula, CA, Lindfield Christian HS) was named the second alternate.
"We're thrilled that the USGA has selected three members of the UCLA women's golf team to the U.S. Curtis Cup roster," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "This is truly a great day for UCLA women's golf."
All three players are veteran USGA championship participants. In the last two summers, Kono has competed in two U.S. Women's Amateur Championships and a pair of U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championships. She advanced to the semifinals of the USWAPL in 2008. Last season Kono earned First-Team All-America honors as a freshman, and this season she is a legitimate candidate for Player of the Year.
Lua has played in three U.S. Women's Open Championships, making the cut in 2008 before tying for 71st place. She has also played in a total of four U.S. Women's Amateur events, advancing to the semifinals last summer. Finally, she participated in five U.S. Girls Championships from 2004-08 and advanced to the third round of match play in 2007.
Michaels, 21, has two collegiate titles to her credit. She has played in four U.S. Women's Amateurs, two USWAPL events and a pair of U.S. Women's Opens. In the 2008 Open she tied for 64th.
