MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - For the third straight year, the UCLA women's rowing team swept Loyola Marymount in all four events in the Bruins' season opener on Saturday at Ballona Creek. The Bruin varsity eight also claimed the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup by defeating LMU for the sixth consecutive season.
With the increasing headwind growing very strong over the last race, the UCLA varsity eight finished in a time of 7:05.70, besting the Lions by more than 18 seconds (7:24.57). Representing the varsity eight squad were Vanessa Teff (stroke), Elise Wilson, Candace Ferguson, Patricia Dudziec, Lynn Hancock, Alexandra Howard, Destinie Slavich, Erin Haggerty (bow) and Alaizah Koorji (coxswain).
In an exhibition time trial to start off the event, the Bruins' novice eight squad posted a mark of 7:11.60. In the boat for the novice eight were Molly Dallmar (stroke), Sarah O'Leary, Shizue Reid, Ariana Moeser, Megan Pratt, Antonia Hubbard, Melissa Hong, Jessica Schlosser (bow) and Jacqueline Ellis (coxswain).
The first dual race of the day came in the third varsity eight race. UCLA (6:45.20) finished with a lead of more than 18 seconds, as LMU came in with a time of 7:12.15. Rowing for the Bruins were Christina King (stroke), Megan Lightfoot, Christina Sprouse, Katrina Darracq, Danielle Piccinini, Ashley Guzik, Stephanie Duclett, Jessica Cherry (bow) and Brittany Liljeqvist (coxswain).
In the second varsity eight race, the Bruins (6:45.20) bettered the Lions' time by almost 27 seconds (7:12.15). The lineup for the second varsity squad was Elizabeth Herron (stroke), Lauren Counter, Sheerin Salimi, Kristin Fitzmorris, Brittanee Marksbury, Vanessa Jansen, Alexandra Lauren, Rachel LaBella (bow), Gevvy Seferaj (coxswain)
The Bruins are back at Ballona Creek next Saturday when they host San Diego State.
