LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's tennis player Haythem Abid won a pair of singles matches Thursday to advance to the round of 16 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships held at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. On the women's side, UCLA's Riza Zalameda and Yasmin Schnack also won their singles matches, and teamed together for a win in doubles play, at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club.
Abid, a 9-16 seed, opened the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 decision over Tulsa's Will Gray. After a short rest, he was back on the courts taking on USC's Kaes Van't Hof in the second round. Abid dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but bounced back to win 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-4. Awaiting him in the round of 16 is top-seeded and defending NCAA singles champion Somdev Devvarman from Virginia.
At Riviera on Thursday, fourth-seeded Schnack and Zalameda won their opening doubles match, defeating Auburn's Alexandra Haney/Melissa Koning, 8-3. They will face Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey/Zsofia Zuber in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Schnack and Zalameda will also be competing in singles on Friday, as both won first-round matches Thursday. Schnack upset fifth-seeded Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech, 6-4, 6-2, setting up a second-round showdown against Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas. Zalameda downed Georgia's Monica Dancevic, 6-3, 6-4. She will next face Fresno State's Melanie Gloria.
Senior Tracy Lin lost her opening singles match Thursday, falling to Miami's Laura Vallverdu, 6-3, 6-3. Lin is still alive in the consolation draw.
