LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team registered its second victory on the day, downing Sonoma State, 14-7, at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins (26-0) received goals from 10 players, as senior Courtney Mathewson led the way with three goals. Juniors Katie Rulon and Tanya Gandy each added two goals in the non-conference victory.
UCLA defeated No. 5 San Diego State, 17-5, in an MPSF match at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center earlier Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins raced to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter against Sonoma State (11-12). Mathewson, Rulon and Gandy each scored to give the Bruins their three-goal cushion. Rulon and Gandy each scored one more goal, and Mathewson added two more goals to push UCLA to a 10-2 halftime lead.
The Sea Wolves made a second-half run, as Samantha Burchard, Jessica Scott and Holly Armijo scored to cut the Bruins' advantage to 11-5. UCLA responded with goals from freshman Camy Sullivan and senior Kamaile Crowell to lead 13-5. Junior Samantha Spears added the Bruins' final goal, her first collegiate goal, as UCLA won by the final 14-7 margin.
UCLA returns to the pool against Arizona State on Sunday, April 13, for its final regular-season match of the season. Game time of the MPSF match is slated for 1 p.m. The Bruins' five seniors will be honored prior to Sunday's game.
