Feb. 4, 2012

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 9 UCLA men's tennis team lost the doubles point but managed to cruise in singles play on Saturday, dispatching of No. 6 Stanford, 6-1 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Bruins, who also downed No. 13 Cal, 4-3 on Friday in Berkeley. With the win, UCLA improves to 6-0 on the season. The Cardinal, who also lost to top-ranked USC on Friday, see their record fall to 4-2 on the year.

The Bruins actually won the first doubles match on Saturday, with Warren Hardie and Clay Thompson registering an 8-5 win over Walker Kehrer and Robert Stineman at court No. 3. Stanford, however, notched wins at the other two courts to take the point, winning 8-3 at court No. 1 and 8-6 at court No. 2.

The Bruins were able to shake off the setback in doubles, coming out after the break to eventually take all six matches in singles play. Dennis Mkrtchian and Adrien Puget both posted straight-set wins on the day, with Mkrtchian downing Jamin Ball, 6-1, 6-3 at court No. 6, and Puget overcoming Stineman, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. The other four singles wins for the Bruins came in three sets.

The most entertaining encounter came at the No. 1 position, where redshirt senior Nick Meister was in a tough battle with 37th-ranked Ryan Thacher. Meister, who clinched the team's 4-3 win over Cal on Friday, was victorious again, downing Thacher, 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-5. Marcos Giron, Maxime Tabatruong and Thompson also notched singles wins.

Saturday's result does not count in the Pac-12 standings. The conference match between the two teams is scheduled for April 13 at UCLA.

Next up for UCLA is a home match against San Diego State on Feb. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
