STANFORD, Calif. - The UCLA men's water polo team lost to USC, 10-5, in an MPSF Tournament semifinal match at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior Jacob Murphy led the Bruins (19-5) with two goals against the Trojans (25-2).

No. 3-seeded UCLA also received one goal each from senior Kevin Kuga, junior Cullen Hennessy and sophomore Griffin White.

Jeremy Davie and Nikola Vavic each scored a game-leading three goals for USC. The No. 2-seeded Trojans also had two goals from Peter Kurzeka and one goal from Brian Bosworth and Mace Rapsey.

USC led the semifinal contest from the start, opening with the game's first two goals - from Davie and Kurzeka - midway through the first quarter. The Bruins got as close as 2-1 in the first period, scoring on a goal from Murphy.

The Trojans closed the first quarter on a 5-0 scoring run. Leading 5-1 after the first quarter, the Trojans added two goals - from Davie and Vavic - in the second quarter to assume a 7-1 halftime cushion.

UCLA trimmed the deficit to 7-3 by the end of the third quarter, receiving goals from Murphy and Hennessy.

In the final period, the Bruins could not shrink the deficit to fewer than four goals. UCLA trailed 8-4 after White's goal with 4:21 to play in the contest before USC outscored the Bruins, 2-1, the rest of the way.

Freshman goalkeeper James Hartshorne was credited with four saves for UCLA. USC goalkeeper Joel Dennerley registered 10 saves in the cage.

UCLA will play No. 1-seed California (23-3) in the MPSF Tournament's third-place match on Sunday. Game time at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center is 1:30 p.m.
