No. 13 Women's Tennis to Host No. 1 Stanford, No. 8 Cal

April 11, 2007

Top-10 Opponents to Visit the LATC This Weekend
The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team (13-6; 4-1 Pac-10) hosts two of its biggest matches of the season this week, as the Bruins welcome top-ranked Stanford (17-1; 5-0 Pac-10) and No. 8 Cal (19-3; 5-0) to the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Action gets underway this Friday with the Bruins and Cardinal facing off at 1:30 p.m. The two teams met back on Feb. 17 in the Bay Area, with Stanford pulling out a close 4-3 decision. UCLA returns to action on Saturday, hosting Cal at Noon. The Golden Bears registered a 7-0 victory over the Bruins back on Feb. 16. Unlike the previous meetings with these two teams, this weekend's matches will count in the Pac-10 standings. Admission is free to all regular-season matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Fans unable to attend can follow the live stats by clicking HERE.

The Final Stretch
UCLA has just four regular-season matches remaining before heading to the Pac-10 Individual Championships, April 25-29 in Ojai, Calif. Following this weekend's matches, UCLA will host No. 21 Pepperdine on Apr. 18 at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins then round out the year at No. 7 USC on Apr. 21 at Noon.

Bruins Split in the Desert
UCLA picked up a split in the desert last week, falling 4-3 to No. 25 Arizona State on Friday before rebounding to defeat Arizona, 5-2 the following day. The Bruins' match with ASU came down to the No. 2 singles position, where UCLA freshman Yasmin Schnack had to injury retire in her match with Nadia Abdala. Schnack was leading 4-2 in the third set at the time of her retirement. The Bruins bounced back strong on Saturday, winning the doubles point and taking four of six singles matches to defeat Arizona.

In the Fila/ITA Rankings
Following its loss to Arizona State, the Bruins fell three places from No. 10 to No. 13 in this week's Fila/ITA National Rankings. Individual rankings did not change this week, as the Bruins' three ranked singles players are still Riza Zalameda (#22), Yasmin Schnack (#47) and Tracy Lin (#49). Schnack and Zalameda are ranked No. 22 in doubles. They are joined by No. 33 Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore. New team and individual rankings will be released next Tuesday.

Streaks
Alex McGoodwin currently owns the longest singles winning streak on the team at eight. Her last loss was a three-set decision against Marion Ravelojaona of Cal back on Feb. 16. McGoodwin has also won 10 of her last 11. Ashley Joelson recently upped her winning streak to five with a pair of wins last weekend. Riza Zalameda, on the other hand, had her five-match winning streak snapped when she lost to Arizona's Danielle Steinberg, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday.
