Riverside, Calif. - The No. 18 UCLA baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to UC Riverside Tuesday evening at Riverside Sports Complex. Catcher Ryan Babineau led the Bruins offensively, as he hit 3-for-3 and scored the only run for UCLA (22-17).

The loss was UCLA's third in the last 17 games and snapped the Bruins' seven-game win streak. UCLA and UC Riverside split the home-and-home season series, as the Bruins downed the Highlanders, 3-2, on Feb. 13.

Bruin left-hander Brendan Lafferty (3-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two unearned runs off one hit in 2.2 innings of relief. Highlander right-hander Matt Montgomery (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season, throwing three innings of scoreless relief. Right-hander Joe Kelly notched his third save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth inning for UC Riverside.

UC Riverside (24-16) took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by shortstop Jaime Pedroza in the top of the first inning. The Bruins tied the contest in the fifth on an RBI-single to right by second baseman Alden Carrithers, who scored catcher Ryan Babineau from third.

The Highlanders cashed in on two UCLA errors in the bottom of the sixth to assume a 3-1 lead. With runners at first and second, left fielder Aaron Wible reached first on a fielding error by Bruin shortstop Brandon Crawford, allowing Pedroza to score from second. With two outs, Lafferty misplayed a groundball off the mound from second baseman Ben Price, allowing first baseman Mark Samuelson to score.

UCLA returns to action Friday, April 24, when the 18th-ranked Bruins open a three-game Pac-10 series against Arizona (31-9, 9-3 Pac-10). First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
