The fifth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team lost a three-game decision to No. 2 UC Irvine on Friday night at the Bren Center.
UC Irvine won 30-26, 30-28, 30-21 in 91 minutes before a crowd of 3,612. The victory raised the Anteaters' overall record to 20-3, 14-3 in MPSF play. The Bruins fell to 12-9, 9-8. The sweep was UCI's 12th of the season and its fourth straight victory against the Bruins.
Both teams hit miserably in Game 3; UCI hit -.091 and UCLA hit -.026, but the Bruins committed a dozen service errors with just one ace. Overall UCLA served five aces in the match, but made 24 service miscues. UCI had four aces and 11 service errors. The Anteaters controlled the net by out-blocking the Bruins, 10.5-5.0.
Individually, UCLA senior Steve Klosterman hammered 21 kills to lead both teams. Quick hitters Jamie Diefenbach and Brett Perrine combined for 13 kills and each hit for a high percentage. Junior libero Tony Ker led all players with 12 digs and his brother Kevin recorded 38 set assists.
UCI senior Matt Webber led the winners with 16 kills (.345), followed by eight from middle blocker David Smith, who hit .636.
The Bruins return to Pauley Pavilion next week for a two-match, non-conference home stand against No.15 Ball State. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
