LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Tim Murphy (5-4) hurled UCLA's second complete game in as many days to lead the No. 2-seeded Bruins past No. 1 seed Long Beach State, 7-4, Sunday evening at Blair Field. The win sends UCLA (33-26) into the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time since 2000.
Murphy allowed three runs in the first inning before holding Long Beach State (39-20) to one run over the final eight frames. The sophomore left-hander struck out eight and walked three in his first collegiate complete game.
Second baseman Alden Carrithers led UCLA at the plate, as he hit 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis was named NCAA Long Beach Regional MVP after hitting 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI in Sunday's victory. Curtis finished the weekend hitting .500 (7-for-14) with two runs, one home run, one double and three RBI.
Long Beach State assumed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI double by center fielder Robert Perry and a run-scoring groundout by left fielder Steve Tinoco.
The Bruins cut Long Beach State's lead to 3-2 with a two-run third inning. Center fielder Justin Uribe led off the frame with a double to center field and moved to third on an infield single by left fielder Brady Dolan. Uribe scored on a dropped sacrifice fly ball by right fielder Jason Corder. Dolan reached home on an infield single by second baseman Alden Carrithers.
The Dirtbags added one more run in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI-single to center by first baseman Brandon Godfrey to lead 4-2.
UCLA took its first lead in the top of the fifth inning. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis led off with a solo blast over the left-field fence. With the bases loaded and nobody out, right fielder Gabe Cohen delivered a two-RBI double over Dirtbags center fielder Robert Perry, allowing Carrithers and Brandon Crawford to score and hand UCLA a 5-4 advantage. The Bruins added their sixth run on a sacrifice fly to center by first baseman Tim Stewart.
Designated hitter Cody Decker helped give UCLA a 7-4 lead with a two-out RBI-single to right field, allowing Carrithers to score from second.
Game Notes: UCLA earned its first win in three games against Long Beach State in 2007...the Bruins swept an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2000, when UCLA last advanced to the Super Regionals...UCLA pounded out 14 hits against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday and tallied 12 hits on Sunday against the Dirtbags.
