Los Angeles, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team defeated seventh-ranked California, 11-5, in a Saturday afternoon MPSF matchup at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus. Senior Tanya Gandy led the Bruins with four goals, and senior Kelly Rulon added three of her own as the Bruins improved to 13-3 on the year and 4-0 in the MPSF. Cal, which drops to 17-4, 1-2 in the Pac-10, was led by Meghan Corso, who recorded a hat trick with three fourth-quarter goals.
Cal scored the first goal of the contest when Erin Scully notched a goal at 6:17. The Bruins dominated after that, however, scoring nine unanswered goals to take a 9-1 lead early in the third quarter. Gandy tied the score with 4:57 on the clock on a penalty shot, and freshman Sarah Orozco gave UCLA a 2-1 lead thirty seconds later. Gandy closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a goal at the 2:01 mark.
After taking a 7-1 halftime lead, the Bruins continued the scoring run in the third quarter with goals by Anne Belden at 7:16 and Rulon at 6:37. Cal finally ended the run at 6:15 in the third quarter on a goal by Paige Lorenz that made the score 9-2, UCLA.
In the fourth quarter, Hannah Sebenaler gave UCLA a 10-2 advantage before Corso recorded two straight goals to trim the lead to 10-4, but Rulon put UCLA ahead by seven, 11-4, and four fourth quarter saves by Bruin goalkeeper Brittany Fullen kept the Bears at bay. Fullen finished the game with 10 saves, as did Cal goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham.
UCLA is in action again on Sunday in Thousand Oaks with games against Cal Lutheran at 8:30 am and vs. Cal State Northridge at 1:30 pm.
