MALIBU, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team lost to Pepperdine, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a non-conference game. The Waves (26-13) took advantage of a five-run third inning to assume a 5-1 lead and limited the visiting Bruins (22-18) to two runs and four hits at the plate.

Bruin right-hander Garett Claypool (1-2) absorbed the loss, allowing five runs (four earned), three hits and five walks in 2.1 innings. Pepperdine left-hander Scott Alexander (5-2) earned the victory, allowing one run and one hit in four innings of relief while notching three strikeouts. Pepperdine's Nick Gaudi recorded the final three outs in the ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the season.

UCLA left-hander Brendan Lafferty pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, recording one strikeout while giving up one hit. Bruin center fielder Blair Dunlap went 1-for-3 with one double, and second baseman Niko Gallego went 1-for-3 with one of the Bruins' two runs.

Pepperdine was led at the plate by designated hitter Matt Aidem, who went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer. Shortstop Chase d'Arnaud went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Left-hander Matt Bywater allowed one run and two hits in four innings as the starting pitcher.

The Waves broke open the contest in the third inning. With runners aboard first and second, Aidem belted a three-run homer to right field, handing Pepperdine a 3-1 cushion. The Waves added their fourth run on a bases loaded wild pitch, sending home catcher Trent Diedrich, who reached base getting hit by a pitch. An inning-ending double play, from third base to first base and back to third, plated first baseman Ryan Heroy.

The Waves added another run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, d'Arnaud reached on an infield single with the bases loaded, sending home second baseman Denny Duron.

UCLA scored one run in each of the third and ninth innings. In the top of the third, Gallego lined a double to right field. Left fielder Alden Carrithers followed with an infield single to d'Arnaud, whose errant throw to first base allowed Gallego to score from third.

With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Brady Dolan blooped a base-hit into right field, sending home designated hitter Cody Decker, who led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. The Bruins ended the game stranding the bases loaded.

UCLA returns to action against Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, April 30. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 6 p.m.
