Bruins Finish the First Day of San Diego Crew Classic

2012 San Diego Crew Classic Schedule and Full Results

San Diego, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team completed the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday, earning a first-place finish in the second varsity eight and open eight heats. The Bruins also took second place in both the varsity four and novice eight heats.

UCLA's varsity eight finished third in a six-boat heat on Saturday morning, posting a time of 6:49.603. USC and Virginia finished first and second respectively while the Bruins crossed the finish line ahead of Washington State, Texas and Alabama.

The Bruins' varsity four crew finished second in their heat, coming in with a time of 7:37.77. Virginia's 'A' crew took first place, just edging UCLA with a time of 7:37.64. British Columbia, Clemson, USC's 'B' crew, Oklahoma and San Diego State finished behind the Bruins in that order.

UCLA's second varsity eight took first place in 2V8+ 'A' heat, posting a time of 6:46.11. The Bruins beat out Pac-12 foe California by over seven full seconds in the race as the Golden Bears finished with a time of 6:53.64. Washington State, Oklahoma, Iowa, Alabama and Sacramento State rounded out the finishers in the heat.

The Bruins' novice eight crew raced to a second-place finish in their heat with a time of 6:56.03. California was the winner of the heat, clocking in with a time of 6:53.04. Texas' 'B' crew, USC, Clemson, Minnesota's 'B' crew and San Diego State finished behind the Bruins in that order.

Like the second varsity eight crew, the Bruins' open eight recorded a first-place finish with a time of 7:17.28. UCLA bested the BMA Boat Club by just over four seconds in the heat. San Diego, British Columbia, UC San Diego, the Royal Air Force Rowing Club and UC Irvine rounded out the final five finishers in the women's open eight 'A' heat.

UCLA will wrap up competition in the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday.
