Senior Driver Kelly Rulon was named the MVP of the MPSF Tournament held this past weekend in Tempe, Arizona. Kelly scored eight goals in a three game span for the 2007 MPSF Tournament Champion Bruins. She single-handedly outscored UCLA's championship opponent, netting four goals to Stanford's three. In the semifinals, she scored three goals as the Bruins defeated the Trojans for the third time this year.
Last year she scored six goals in the MPSF Tournament, and set a new record with 11 goals in the NCAA Tournament. For her career, she has scored 23 goals in the MPSF tournament and 20 goals in the NCAA Tournament. She is two goals shy of tying UCLA's all-time career scoring record of 235, currently held by assistant coach Coralie Simmons.
Senior goalie Emily Feher was named to the MPSF All-Tournament Team, as was Senior Center Forward Kacy Kunkel. Emily had a total of 16 saves in the three-game tournament, including eight in the championship game. Kacy scored three goals in the tournament, two of which came in the first quarter of the semifinals against USC.
In two weeks, the Bruins will play for their third consecutive NCAA Championship, as well as the 100th championship in school history. The NCAA Championships will take place at the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos, California.
The field of eight teams was announced yesterday, with UCLA capturing the #2 seed. The Bruins will face seventh-seeded Pomona-Pitzer in the first round. Should they advance, they will face the winner of third-seeded USC versus sixth-seeded Hartwick. The Bruins first game is scheduled for Friday, May 11, at 1:30 PM.
