Three Bruins Earn First-Team All-Pac-10 Volleyball Honors

Nov. 27, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Three UCLA women's volleyball players, Katie Carter, Nana Meriwether and Nellie Spicer have earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors, it was announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen on Monday.

Washington's Christal Morrison was named Player of the Year, USC's Taylor Carico was named Freshman of the Year and Oregon's Jim Moore was named Coach of the Year.

This is the second first-team All-Pac-10 honor for both Meriwether and Spicer and it is the first such honor for Carter.

Carter, a senior outside hitter from Steamboat Springs, Colo., was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for October 2 after UCLA posted home wins over Washington and Washington State. She is second on the team in kills per game with a 3.34 average and is third on the team in blocking with a 0.94 per-game average. Carter was also named to All-Tournament teams at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic.

Meriwether, a senior middle blocker from Potomac, Md., is a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Week this season, including earning AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week notice on Sept. 5. For that national honor, Meriwether recorded the fourth-highest attack percentage in NCAA Division I history with at least 20 attacks (20K-1E-24TA). She also earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at all four of UCLA's tournaments, including MVP honors at the State Farm Bearcat Invitational, Hawaiian Airlines Classic and Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational. Meriwether currently leads the Pac-10 and NCAA Division I with a .459 season attack percentage and a 1.94 blocks per-game average.

Spicer, a sophomore setter from Barrington, Ill., has piloted the Bruins to a team .264 attack percentage, a mark that ranks 22nd among all NCAA Division I teams. Her individual average of 13.71 assists per game is second in the Pac-10 and sixth in the nation. Spicer earned All-Tournament honors at the Hilton Garden Inn Grenbelt Invitational and the Pioneer Classic, where she was named the Tournament MVP.

UCLA, the No. 4 national seed for the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, opens postseason play on Friday at 8 pm against UAB in Pauley Pavilion.
